WHAT MATERIALS DO YOU USE TO BUILD CABINETS?
There are a number of materials that can be used to construct cabinet, from man made to genuine wood. Your choice of material will greatly impact the look and valu of your cabinetry
HOW DO YOU ASSEMBLE THECABINETS?
Assembly methods change from cabinet maker to cabinet maker, some assembly methods are better than others. Boxes that are stapled tend to fall apart over time . Pocket holes with glue and screws is a much better way to construct cabinets. Mortise and Tenon joinery is also very good.
WHAT FINISHES WILL BE APPLIED AND WHERE?
Some cabinet makers will apply the finish in their own shop and others will sorce that part of the build to a full time finisher. The finish that is at the top of our list is a pre-catalyzed lacquer, this finish is very hard and offers the best durability for kitchen cabinetry. Some cabinet makers are now using a water based finish.
WHAT MATERIAL IS USED FOR THE DOORS AND DRAWERS?
At Turner Custom Wood Design, we use only stock lumber for the doors, drawers and shelves. these components can be constructed from MDF but we do not use MDF for any of our projects.
WHAT STYLES OF DOORS ARE AVAILABLE?
Cabinet makers usually have samples of the door syles that they use and offer, most styles include, 5 piece raised panel door, shaker door, flat panel door or your cabinet maker may do custom styles.
ARE 3D DRAWINGS AVAILABLE
It is a good idea to have shop drawings of your cabinetry before starting the project, keep the lines of communication open with yoyr cabinet maker to make sure you are in complete understanding of what will be built.
HOW LONG WILL THE PROJECT TAKE?
Building and installing quality custom cabinetry does take time, it is important to contact your cabinet maker early in your project to ensure the cabinets can be completed in a reasonable time frame. Make sure the cabinet maker is clear on the deadline, this gives them the opportunity to clearify they can finish your project in time. Disrtupting your home for long periods of time is to be avoided.
DO YOU INSTALL?
There are those cabinet makers who do not install, it is important to find this information out before signing the contract. If you choose to work with a cabinet maker that does not install, finding the installer will be up to you. It is better to have someone that is knowlegable about cabinetry to install your cabinets so your cabinet maker is the best choice to have install.
Once your initial questions have been answered to your satisfaction, it is time to sign the contract!
